We’re often asked by customers why a double-arm LCD, LED or Plasma mount arm should be selected over a single arm version.

Clearly, both single and double-arm mounts allow flat panel TVs and Monitors to be turned to the left and right by a certain amount, generally speaking, the longer the combined reach from the wall, the further the screen will turn.

The amount of screen turn depends on two factors, the actual display dimensions and the length of the arm, obviously a very short arm will only allow a screen to turn a little, until the edges of the screen touch the wall.

Single Arm Screen Wall mount Arms

Generally, single-arm wall mount brackets allow the screen to turn to the left or right by a degree limited by the length of the arm, these are great if you need to turn the screen between say a kitchen and a dining area, typically a 45 degree turn to the left or right can be expected.

A single-arm wall mount bracket can typically swing to the left or to the right of the wall fixing, allowing the arm to be parallel to the wall. When pushed-back to the wall, the TV must locate to the left or the right of the wall fixing, usually by the length of the arm. This can restrict where the screen arm can be located.

Due to the available degree of turn, these single-arm mount are not usually flexible enough for them to be used in the corner of a room.

Double Arm Screen Wall Mount Arms

Generally, double-arm wall mounting arms are much more flexible than the single arm versions. If the recommended maximum screen size is adhered to, then double arms allow the TV or Monitor to turn 90 degrees to the left or right, effectively giving a full 180 degree left/right turn.

A typical double-arm mount bracket has an elbow joining the arms, this allows the screen to be kept central to the wall fixing. If manufactured by a reputable manufacturer, then the TV’s home position can also be fully extended to the left or right of the bracket, when pushed back to the wall. These brackets are therefore better for restricted wall space.

Double-arm mounts are perfect for positioning a TV or Monitor in the corner of a room, as the 180 degree flexibility allows the screen to point to any position in the room.

Cantilever TV Wall Mounts 

A true Cantilever Mounting bracket, allows a TV or Monitor to be pulled-away from a wall and then turned to the left or right by a certain degree, typically 60 degrees to the left and 60 degrees to the right, hence a total turn flexibility of 120 degrees. This degree of flexibility is manufacturer and model specific. True Cantilever mounts do not allow the screen to swing to the left or right, the only allow the screen to turn left and right, while maintaining the screens centred position.

Cantilever Mounts should generally be avoided when mounting a screen in the corner of the room, as sometimes the 120 degree turn is not enough to allow the screen to be pointed to all areas of the room. Also, Cantilever Mounts are generally more expensive than double-arm mounts, without offering any significant benefit.

Cantilever Mounts are perfect for mounting screens into restricted spaces such as custom-built furniture, or mounting a screen into a narrow alcove. The ability to pull the screen forward from a very restrictive space allows access to the cables and other connectors. If mounted correctly,  then the edges of the screen should not move left or right, preventing it from touching the cabinet or wall.

Sadly, there is a lot of confusion in the marketplace, many suppliers use the word ‘Cantilever’ to describe double or single arm mounts, this is simply incorrect.
