Flat Screen Mounts, AV Furniture, Stands & Trolleys Sales & Consultancy
We recently saw an LCD / TFT / LED VESA100 flush wall mount fitting on Ebay, advertised at £3.99 including VAT and Shipping.
From experience, we know that shipping a product, even by 2nd class Royal Mail, costs in the region of £1.20, take off the VAT and you’re left with a product costing just £2.13. Take off the Ebay and Paypal fees, then the net value of the product would be less than £2.
So what do you get for your money?
Well, curiosity got the better of us, so we bought one.
The advertisement claimed that 3mm cold rolled steel was used during the manufacturing process, well that may be what the production machines were made of, but the thickness of the metal on the version we received was less than 2mm.
Interestingly, the advert also claimed that this was the “new, higher quality production version.”
To be fair, the design was functional, all the holes were where they should have been and they all lined-up correctly.
The instructions were images simply printed on the box, with no text to speak of. The box itself was a plain brown, single-ply cardboard construction.
Again, to be fair the screw-fixings were OK, although one of the wall screws did not have a properly-formed screw-head. That said, if we were to install it we would have used bigger wall screws and plugs anyway.
The only contact detail for customer support was an email address, and interestingly there was no indication of the place of manufacture printed on the box. Neither were there any safety conformity details printed. Also there was no branding or logo
So, what was our verdict?
Well of course you wouldn’t expect us to rave about the quality of a competitor’s bracket; and indeed, you’re absolutely correct.
The thickness of the metal used was so thin it was positively flimsy, it could easily be bent and twisted by hand.
Our equivalent product is the BTV110 which is much better value for money. It’s certainly a more expensive product, but comparing the products side-by-side, it’s very clear that you actually do ‘get what you pay for’. Although we’re sure that in some environments the cheap bracket may ‘do a job’, we just could not recommend it to our customers. Having sold in excess of 80,000 brackets over the years, due to the quality of our brackets, we’ve never had a TV or Monitor fall. Indeed, we’ve never had a bracket returned to us as the customer thought it wasn’t ‘up-to-the-job’. We are of course very keen to continue this record.
As we’ve said many times, ‘we don’t sell cheap products, we sell high quality products, inexpensively.’
